England have revealed their squad numbers for the upcoming European Championship this summer, with Jack Grealish handed the No 7 shirt.

After months of speculation, Gareth Southgate announced his 26-man squad for this summer’s Euros, as the England boss dropped Jesse Lingard, Ollie Watkins, Ben White, Ben Godfrey and James Ward Prowse, while Mason Greenwood withdrew with injury.

Southgate also named four right backs in his squad, opting to keep Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold as options for the tournament.

Aston Villa captain and talisman Grealish was also named in the squad, having impressed since making his debut last year, and the attacker has been handed the famous No 7 shirt for the duration of England’s time in the competition.  

‘I told my mum I have the No 7 shirt,’ a delighted Grealish told England’s Twitter

‘It’s one of my favourite numbers and I told my mum and I was shocked myself to be honest. 

‘The No 7 at a major tournament for England. I got told on a WhatsApp text. I’m going to keep it forever.’

Meanwhile, England captain Harry Kane will wear the No 9 shirt and is expected to lead the line for the Three Lions as he searches for the Golden Boot.

Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are No 10 and 11 respectively, John Stones will wear the No 5 while Harry Maguire – who is facing a race to reach full fitness – has been given the No 6 shirt.

Alexander-Arnold will wear the No 22, while Wolves captain Conor Coady takes his club number (16) as does Mason Mount (19) and Ben Chilwell (21).

Elsewhere, Manchester City hotshot Phil Foden will wear the No 20, and fans will surely hope that the youngster can emulate the displays of Michael Owen at the 1998 World Cup, in which the former striker wore the same number.

In the battle for the goalkeeping gloves, Jordan Pickford has been given the No 1 shirt ahead of Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone, in a boost for the Everton stopper.
