Jos Buttler became the first England batsman to complete his half-century in the first innings of the second NatWest Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

Number seven Buttler (66no) succeeded where all others had failed – including three who fell in the 40s – as England moved to 344 for eight and into a lead of 170 on a cloudy third morning.

Buttler, dropped on four the previous evening, reached his milestone in the grand manner with a hook off Mohammad Abbas for his first six to add to seven fours from 92 balls.

Debutant Sam Curran had departed shortly beforehand, edging a drive at Abbas low to second slip to go for 20 on his 20th birthday.
