The Tory-run council apologized to staff who won’t get their salaries as expected tomorrow but instead will have to wait until next Tuesday to see their earnings in their bank accounts.

Also affected are caretakers, cooks, and playground assistants.

The authority blames an ‘internal process failure’ for the problem which means many school employees who would have expected to receive their monthly salary payment tomorrow won’t now be paid until next Tuesday, August 29.

NUT member said: ‘This could be very worrying – some people may have their mortgage payments linked to the regular arrival of their salary on a particular date.

‘As it is Bank Holiday it means that that payment will inevitably be late they might be deemed to have not paid on time – which could have serious repercussions.’

Conservative Councillor Louise McKinlay, Cabinet for Resources, said this evening: ‘We are extremely sorry that this error happened and we have launched a full investigation to understand why it occurred and ensure it does not happen again.

‘We will offer all the help, support, and advice we are able to provide to affected schools employees tomorrow and will have a team standing by to deal with calls.

‘Because the actual pay date for affected employees is Saturday 26 August, standing orders and direct debits due then should be processed on Tuesday after the bank holiday, but we will be able to advise school employees with any concerns they may have.’

A full investigation has already been launched into the fiasco and all staff affected have been sent a full written apology.

It is understood that as many as 20,000 employees are affected in total, which is not all teaching staff in the county, and the council’s payroll team are on hand to offer information and advice from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm tomorrow.
