Essex County Cricket Club will conduct their own disciplinary procedures after an independent report found three ex-players were victims of racist abuse, with the new chairman admitting ‘fundamental errors’

Essex will conduct their own disciplinary procedures against people ‘possibly still at the club’ after an independent report found three ex-players were victims of racist abuse.

The long-awaited findings by Katharine Newton QC did not name any players, either victims or perpetrators, but found that three, believed to be Jahid Ahmed, Maurice Chambers and Zoheb Sharif, had been discriminated against while at the club.

Chairman Anu Mohindru, a barrister who has held the post for just two months, said ‘fundamental errors had been made in the past which did not reflect the Essex of today.’

The findings will now be passed on to the ECB where the governing body’s new cricket regulator will consider what action to take and whether the perpetrators, believed to include a former Essex coach and captain, should be named.

Essex also said on Friday they have set up a committee to consider possible sanctions against individuals as a result of the two-year long investigation, with Mohindru confirming they may include current employees of the county.

‘I met with the victims this week and told them the club had failed them,’ Mohindru told Mail Sport. ‘They were frustrated about how long this has taken but I think there was also relief on their part that this process had worked.

‘They appreciated our apology and I don’t think they expected it. It’s not been an easy couple of months.’

In July Mail Sport revealed that former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria had taunted Chambers with a banana during their time together at Chelmsford.
