Euphoria Season 2 Episode 7 recap: Lexi puts on her play about the lives of her friends

Lexi (Maude Apatow) steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight with the debut of her new play in the penultimate Season 2 episode of HBO’s Euphoria.

Lexi has been preparing her play for quite some time, though she’s heard in the trailer for Sunday’s episode saying she was nervous that people might be upset.

Just brief glimpses of the cast members make it clear that the play is about the lives of her friend group, while Rue (Zendaya) continues her struggles with sobriety and her suicidal tendencies.

The episode begins with Lexi in her dressing room taking a few deep breaths before the play is about to go on.

A girl comes in and says they’re ready as she walks out to get the show started with an overture.

We then see Lexi dressed in black at a funeral reception for Rue’s father as she goes in looking for Rue, who is in her room doing drugs.

Lexi asks how she’s feeling and Rue just shrugs, as Lexi says she found a poem and she thought of her.

Lexi says the poem is kind of sweet and she tells Rue, who says it’s, ‘not that bad.’

Lexi reads a poem called Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower by Rainer Maria Rilke, as she reads it to Rue, as we go back to the play where Lexi is reading it on stage.

We see Rue in the crowd watching as Lexi takes pill bottles from Rue’s hoodie on stage and walks out of her room.

She says it happened in the summer when she turned 13 and she though they’d always be friends forever.

The characters who all play Lexi’s real friends as we cut back from the characters on stage to the real people in the audience, who are all seemingly stunned.

They bring out letters that read the title of the play Our Life as Maddy asks, ‘Wait, is this f***ing play about us?’ as the title card is shown.

Lexi is seen talking to Fezco (Angus Cloud) on the phone as she wonders if people will be upset about the play.

Faye (Chloe Cherry) presses a dress shirt for Fezco as he gets ready for the play when his old drug connect Custer (Tyler Chase) shows up.

Lexi heads backstage and starts barking orders at her cast and crew, which causes the girl playing Cassie to cry.

Lexi puts on a tiny red dress for another scene where she fantasizes about all the boys wanting her and never getting her.

Another scene shows Lexi and Cassie talking about Cassie’s boobs, saying she doesn’t want to be a girl who’s known for her body.

Lexi looks out into the crowd and sees an empty seat, as we see a flashback to Fezco telling her on the phone that he’l be in the front row.

Another scene shows Lexi and Cassie watching Rue’s dad stumbling as he drops his keys and gets in the car.

Lexi wants to call their mom to pick her up but Cassie doesn’t want it to seem like they don’t trust him.

Another scene shows Rue and Lexi sitting on the roof of the convenience store as Lexi thinks they should think about the things they don’t like about each other and change them, as Rue smiles in the audience.

Lexi adds in another scene that technology will eventually kill us as she keeps talking about her and Rue, before Lexi’s dad left and Rue’s dad died.

‘It was before we grew apart and before I started to doubt whether Jade was my best friend,’ Lexi says.

Rue is back home with her sister Gia (Storm Reid), who asks her if she’s worried about getting older and having less and less memories of dad.

She asks how to stop it and Rue says she can’t as Rue is seen delivering her tearful eulogy to her father.

Another scene shows Lexi and Cassie and their mother Suze (Alanna Ubach) dancing happily with their father, before he left them.

Cassie smiles at the memory as Suze starts crying, while Cassie holds back her tears, as we see it’s Ethan (Austin Abrams) playing their dad in the play.

Lexi talks about how different her and her sister became, adding that at that age they all thought they knew what love was like.

Another scene shows Lexi and Rue smoking weed together but Lexi isn’t sure about it, but she keeps looking out and sees Fezco’s seat is empty.

Back at Fezco’s crib, Ashtray (Javon Walton) watches Faye with Custer as Fezco asks her if he should wear a tie or not.

Lexi is walking home with Rue and she says she doesn’t think she likes weed because she can’t control her mind like she usually can, but Rue thinks that’s the best part.

‘I think Jade used drugs to push away all the bad thoughts, but it did the opposite for me. All I could think about were the bad thoughts.’

Fezco is seen texting, ‘On my way’ as he starts to leave, while Rue says that she hasn’t spoken to Jules since, ‘that bulls**t intervention’ but she still sees her around.

‘It’s funny how I used to think we were meant for each other. That feels like a lifetime ago,’ Rue says as they see each other in the bathroom and don’t know what to say.

Back at home, Rue’s mother Leslie (Nika King) says she broke her and if she wants to kill herself doing drugs she won’t stop her.

Rue doesn’t believe her but Leslie says she can’t convince her that her life is important.

‘I’m taking you off my plate,’ Leslie says while eating ice cream, saying she’s going to focus on Gia because she’s getting D’s in math and she’s been in detention.

‘But if you say she’s fine I’ll take your word for it,’ Leslie says, as Rue says she didn’t know that and Leslie says Rue only thinks about herself, but she says that’s not true.

Back on stage they talk about how “Hallie and Marta” – Cassie and Maddy – became inseparable once they hit 9th grade, as Maddy fights back the tears as well.

Lexi says Marta/Maddy made her nervous because she’s never seen someone so sure of herself as her.

Another scene shows Maddy doing Lexi’s makeup, but Lexi thinks she looks stupid, while Suze is clearly thoroughly entertained with seeing herself on stage.

Cassie tells Maddy on stage that her parents used to fight a lot too and she can stay there as long as she wants as Maddy starts crying.

Another scene shows Cassie running into the bathroom as Maddy follows her and starts crying demanding her to open the door.

‘You’re a f***ing coward and I would have never done this to you. I would have never done this to you,’ Maddy says before storming off with Kat (Barbie Ferreira).

Back in the theater, Cassie gets up and leaves the theater, heading into the bathroom as she starts crying and trying to compose herself.

She’s seen kissing Nate while Kat is seen dancing for men on the internet as Cassie tells Nate he can control what she wears and who she talks to.

‘I belong to you and I will never complain because i trust you,’ as Nate asks, ‘Aren’t you afraid people are gonna look down on you?’

‘At least I’m loved,’ Cassie says, while we see Maddy and Nate’s characters on stage kissing, as Nate looks uncomfortable in the audience.

Nate has a bizarre dream about his father Cal (Eric Dane) standing over him while Jules is seen destroying the disc with the recording of her with Cal.

Maddy is seen at a baseball game with the woman she babysits for, Samantha (Minka Kelly), who gets her a presesnt.

Back home she opens it and finds the purple dress she was seen trying on ein earlier episodes while she was out.

Cassie is seen backstage as Lexi is seen threatening the light guy to replace him if he messes up another light cue.

Lexi looks out and sees Fezco is still not there, while Ashtray grabs a knife and goes out to confront Custer.

Fezco asks Faye if she thinks other people will think he’s handsome and she says she does.

Fezco says he’s going to head out when he gets a text from Lexi who says she saved him the best seat in the house.

He asks if everything is good as we go back to the theater as they show a homo-erotic weight room scene that everyone seems to like… except Nate, who is clenching his fists.

When the audience applauds, Nate storms off as Cassie follows him as the crowd gives them a standing ovation.

Cassie says she has no idea she did that and Nate says that’s so homophobic as he tells her to get all of her s**t from his house because they’re done.

Cassie goes back out to watch the play from one of the door windows as it’s revealed, ‘To be continued…’ as the episode comes to an end.

The preview for next week’s Season 2 finale teases Fezco’s arrest as Cassie is clearly angry with her sister for the play.

Both Rue and Jules reunited briefly at the end of the second special episode, which were both set over Christmas, with this season premiere described as, ‘Rue and Jules cross paths for the first time since Christmas as East Highland rings in the new year.’

Rue had relapsed after Jules left her at the train station in the Season 1 finale, with Rue revealing to her addict friend Ali (Colman Domingo) during a Christmas Eve dinner that she didn’t know if she wanted to be clean… and that she didn’t even know if she wanted to be alive anymore.

While she seemed like she was in a better head space by the time Ali took her home, she got quite emotional while seeing Jules at the end of the second special episode.

The latest trailer for the second season, though, showed that Rue does eventually dedicate herself to getting clean, seen walking into a meeting Ali is attending.

The trailer also shows Jules reuniting with Rue, seemingly at a New Year’s Eve party, asking her when she relapsed, but she doesn’t answer.

She’s seen dragging along a roller bag suitcase, with Ali asking her ‘the $64,000 question’: ‘What’s in the suitcase?’

The suitcase is shown later being loaded up with drugs while Rue tells Fezco (Angus Cloud) that she has ‘come up with an amazing plan.’

Rue is also seen meeting with a new character, Elliot (Dominic Finke), who at one point Rue says is her, ‘new favorite person.’

The trailer also teases some dramatic tension between Rue and her mother Leslie (Nika Bennett) and hints that the premiere takes place at a New Year’s Eve party.
