‘I see him as free and that is what he should be’: Shackles are off Eden Hazard for Belgium after Real Madrid injury nightmare, says Roberto Martinez
Eden Hazard is playing with freedom for Belgium in Euro 2020 after leaving behind his troubles at Real Madrid, says coach Roberto Martinez.
Hazard will start in Belgium’s final Group B game against Finland in St Petersburg on Monday after coming off the bench to help Martinez’s side book their place in the last 16 with victory over Denmark.
It’s in stark contrast to Hazard’s ongoing issues in Madrid where he has endured two disappointing seasons since leaving Chelsea in a £89million deal.
Eden Hazard is set to start the final Group game for Belgium and is fit again
His former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho told talkSPORT yesterday that Hazard is ‘an amazing player with awful training’.
But Martinez has been recently impressed by the 30-year-old.
‘Eden is Eden now,’ said the Belgium boss. ‘What was unusual was to see him the way we did before.
‘He’s tried so hard to be fit and to be the player that can make a difference at club level.
‘That has probably put him in a mindset where hasn’t enjoyed his football and his body never reacted well.
‘I see him free and that is what he should be — it shouldn’t be the other way around.’
The winger has endured an injury nightmare with Real Madrid since joining from Chelsea
