A former Serbia international has insisted Gareth Southgate made a mistake heading into Euro 2024.

England will look to get their tournament off to a winning start when they take on Serbia at the Veltins-Arena this evening.

Ahead of his fourth major tournament in charge of Three Lions, Southgate made a number of bold selections, including leaving established stars such as Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Marcus Rashford out of his final 26-man squad.

According to former Manchester United star Zoran Tosic, England’s depth in attacking talent could ultimately prove to be their undoing in Germany after they opted to leave Rashford at home.

‘The problem with England is that they have so many options for attacking players,’ Tosic told OLBG. ‘So many good wingers and strikers, so you need to leave somebody out.

‘Marcus Rashford has been left out, but he’s a player who can change the game with one move. I would like to see him in any England squad.

‘I think even if he is not in the best mood and even if he doesn’t have the best season, he has speed, he has fantastic finishing, fantastic cooperation with the teammates.

‘There are not a lot of players like him, not even in England, in the world with that pace and that quality. So for us it’s good that he is not in the squad.

Brought to Old Trafford in 2009 after impressing with Partisan Belgrade in his native country, Tosic struggled to nail down a place in Sir Alex Ferguson’s star-studded side.

After being shipped out on loan to Cologne for the latter half of the 2009-10n campaign, the winger join CSKA Moscow on a permanent deal that summer, going on to win three league titles in seven years in the Russian capital.

Despite ending his international career in 2016 with 76 caps to his name, the 37-year-old is still playing club football in the Greek top flight with Lamia.
