Former NRL star Andrew Frew has pleaded guilty to multiple charges relating to dealing and possessing illegal drugs.

The 50-year-old was caught by police dealing methamphetamine before officers found multiple different kinds of illicit substances and thousands of dollars in cash at his home in Sydney, a court has heard.

The former Eels, Manly and Huddersfield Giants star appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to five counts of drug supply.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of drug possession, two counts of dealing with the proceeds of crime and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

The court heard that police officers had been instructed in September last year to investigate his alleged drug dealing activities.

As part of their inquiry, Police recorded Frew supplying 3.4g of methamphetamines for $500 in November. He had been recorded making the exchange at the Tramsheds complex, an industrial-style chic food market in Forest Lodge.

Police arrested the former footballer around a month after the incident.

Court documents state that police had found a bag inside a hire car Frew had rented in which they found clear bags containing 5.7g of cocaine and 9g of meth.

Officers also found $1045 in cash inside the vehicle.

A search conducted by police of his apartment on Harbour St found a safe in his bedroom. Upon unlocking the safe, officers located a further $2000, which they suspected was the alleged proceeds of crime.

Investigators also found multiple clear resealable bags containing 1.1g of cocaine, 1g of heroin and 18g of meth in the apartment as well as five diazepam tablets and 15 Oxycodone tablets. $500 in cash was also discovered.

Frew, who played as a fullback or wing, began his professional rugby league career with the Eels in 1997. He’d join Manly in 1999 where he made 21 appearances for the Sea Eagles, returning 12 tries, before joining up with the Northern Eagles a season later.

The 50-year-old hung up his boots in 2004, following a spell in the UK playing for the Huddersfield Giants, Wakefield, and Halifax.

Frew’s lawyer had requested a six-week adjournment to the case stating that his client needed time to finish a voluntary drug and alcohol treatment program. He also told the court that Frew had ‘made some progress’.

The request was granted by Judge Michael Allen.

Frew is now set to be sentenced on April 30.

‘You’ve taken the first valuable steps… you need to continue with the treatment directions,’ Judge Allen said to Frew in court on Wednesday.

He also added that it was ‘important’ that Frew addressed his addiction to drugs.
