Former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas had his £12,000 racing bike stolen today when he popped into a coffee shop on the Riviera.

The 35-year-old was enjoying an off-season ride in the South of France, but had to book an Uber cab to get home. 

The two-time Olympic gold medallist took to Twitter to post an angry picture of himself in the back of the car with the caption: ‘Lovely ride. Lovely coffee shop in Menton.

‘Except someone nicked my bike.

‘Now in an Uber home. It’s a Dogma F with F12 stickers. Random miss matched wheels and in need of a wash.’ 

In another Tweet, Thomas said he also hadn’t downloaded his ‘Garmin yet’, likely referring to training data on a smartwatch or wearable fitness tracker made by the tech company.

The post was liked by more than 1.5k people and a flurry of comments gave Thomas tips on securing his bike and offered sympathies.

Alan Robertson commented: ‘Ouch – I have hidden an apple tracker in mine just In case – hope you get it back.’

Another user David N. Welton said: ‘I clip my helmet around the spokes. It’s not much, but would at least prevent someone from hopping on and riding off.’

Thomas, from Cardiff, Wales won the 2018 edition of the three-week race rides for Ineos Grenadiers and was wearing their distinctive sponsored cycling clothing when he stopped at the café.
