Thousands of children were more than happy to go to school this morning as they dressed up as their favourite storybook characters to mark World Book Day.

Pictures shared on social media showed gleeful youngsters imitating story-time favourites such as the Cat In A Hat, the Hungry Caterpillar and the BFG.

By far the most popular character was once again Harry Potter, with hundreds of children dressing up as the boy wizard.

The annual celebration of authors and illustrators is marked in more than 100 countries around the world, and is aimed at inspiring children to enjoy reading.

And it wasn’t just the pupils who were excited about the big day, with teachers and parents also expressing their anticipation.

Mother-of-three Sabbiyah Pervez tweeted: ‘We have a Queen of Hearts, Harry Potter and A Very Hungry Caterpillar in the house!! We LOVE #WorldBookDay.’
