A bully who admitted harassing her teenage schoolmate to suicide after months of relentless torment now works as a nurse where her victim was treated.
Kayla Narey, 31, was dubbed one of America’s most hated people after pleading guilty to a targeted campaign of harassment against Phoebe Prince in 2010.
She avoided a prison sentence and has since rebuilt her life by marrying and getting a job as a nurse at Baystate Medical Center, where Phoebe was treated for an unsuccessful suicide attempt months before her tragic death.
Phoebe, who was just 15 when she died, was targeted after she moved to Massachusetts from Ireland in 2009 and briefly dated Narey’s then-boyfriend Sean Mulveyhill.
Both Mulveyhill and Narey pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor criminal harassment of Phoebe in 2011, with four other teens named as part of the ‘South Hadley Six’ ultimately having their cases dropped.

In now-deleted posts from her social media, Narey has regularly posted updates of her achievements since the court case, smiling with family members.
She bragged about graduating college in 2015, and about her nursing career at the medical center during the pandemic.
Narey posted a picture of herself hugging her mother Susan at her bachelorette party in June last year – one of the many milestones Prince’s mother was robbed of sharing with her daughter.
She continues to use social media, despite being condemned for tormenting Phoebe online in the run-up to her death – and even posting crowing comments gloating in the youngster’s subsequent suicide.
Anne O’Brien told the court in a victim impact statement when Narey and Mulveyhill were sentenced that her daughter’s death would stay with her ‘until the day she dies’.
‘It is impossible to measure the impact of Phoebe’s death upon our lives,’ she told the judge.
‘There will be no more reading to Phoebe, no more hearing her lovely soprano voice.
‘How do you measure a future that should have been rightfully hers? Phoebe was a beautiful, intelligent, gregarious daughter, with a kind heart, able to show compassion for others.’

She also revealed that the last message her daughter had sent read: ‘It would be easier if they had handed me a noose.’
Narey met her now-husband Dan Berniche while working at the hospital in 2016, five years after the resolution of the case, and the pair married in September of last year.
His sister introduced them, with their wedding site confirming that they got engaged on February 13, 2021, and tied the knot at Quonquont Farm less than two years later.
Pictures from the lavish bash show the couple smiling with their family, celebrating their nuptials in Whately, Massachusetts – just half an hour from South Hadley where Prince hung herself at her family home.
Several members of the wedding party shared pictures from the big day, including Narey’s sister, who was her matron of honor.

She then began a nursing residency course at Baystate Health Center – where Phoebe had been treated for a prior suicide attempt in November 2009 before she took her life on January 14, 2010.
Baystate Medical Center was part of a new ‘bullying and suicide prevention forum’ after Phoebe’s death.
Prosecutors said Narey callously posted the word ‘done’ on her Facebook page on the day after Prince committed suicide, apparently celebrating her death as an ‘achievement.’
Reporter E.J. Fleming also claims in her book about Prince’s death that Narey and her friends mimed hanging gestures at a school dance following her suicide.

She later posted on remembrance pages for Prince on Facebook, saying: ‘I’m sorry I drove a mentally unstable girl to suicide’.
Other sick posts included: ‘She got what she deserved’, ‘She was a wuss’, and ‘If you kill yourself because of bullying, you’re a massive FAIL’.
Narey, who lives in a $515,000 farmhouse with her new husband, does not appear to have stayed in contact with her schoolfriends who were also implicated in the schoolgirl’s death.
Her then-boyfriend Mulveyhill has since been accused of raping a college student at Mount Holyoke College where he worked as a bartender, according to the Boston Globe.
Parents were reportedly ‘furious’ that he was able to get a job in an all-female school in the same town where Prince committed suicide.
Mulveyhill broke the terms of his probation in 2013 when he was arrested for breaking and entering, with the 21-year-old college student claiming he assaulted her in 2019 after she gave him a ride home.
The outcome of the case is unclear, with Mulveyhill denying the claims during initial court hearings.
Narey’s co-accused Ashley Longe, who now goes by Ashley Koske, had another criminal harassment case leveled against her by prosecutors in 2017.

Mullins was overheard saying ‘that freshman Phoebe girl’ ‘should get her ass kicked’, while Velazquez (pictured in 2010) offered to punch her in the face, according to legal documents.
She is accused of threatening to slash another woman’s ‘tires and throat,’ according to The Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Koske pleaded not guilty in Eastern Hampshire District Court to threatening to commit murder, threatening to damage a motor vehicle and criminal harassment.
Prince moved to South Hadley in Massachusetts in August 2009 with her mother Anne O’Brien and younger sister Lauren, who found her dead body.
The family moved from Fanore in County Claire in Ireland, leaving behind her father Jeremy, and three of Prince’s older siblings.
Shortly after moving to the area, Prince became involved with Sean Mulveyhill – the captain of the football team who had previously dated Narey.
In November of that year, Mulveyhill, 17, and Narey reunited, leaving Phoebe on the wrong side of the popular crowd.
She was targeted by the couple, as well as their friends Flannery Mullins, 18, Ashley Longe, 17, Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 18, and Austin Renaud, 19.

All of the teenagers took a plea deal which prevented the case from reaching a criminal trial, admitting facts of the case with some more serious charges being dropped.
Narey would have faced felony charges as an adult of criminal harassment, violation of civil rights with bodily injury and disturbance of a school assembly – which could have seen her jailed for up to a decade.
It required her to admit there was sufficient evidence for her to be found guilty of criminal harassment at trial without entering a guilty plea.
In exchange, her criminal record would be clean upon the completion of the probation.
Court documents claim that Prince later became close with Renaud, who was dating Mullins at the time – which only made the bullying ramp up.
Authorities conducted a three-month investigation, which found Prince was called a ‘s***’, ‘Irish w****’ and ‘f***ing ho’ by various members of the group.
Prosecutors said Mullins cornered Prince in bathrooms and chased her through the halls, warning her to stay away from her boyfriend.

She was overheard saying ‘that freshman Phoebe girl’ ‘should get her ass kicked’, while Velazquez offered to punch her in the face, according to legal documents.
Prince texted a friend the day before she died saying school had been ‘close to intolerable’, with Neary, Mulveyhill and Longe all accused of tormenting her in the library on January 14.
Court documents say one of the group wrote ‘Irish b**** is a c***’ next to her name on the sign-in sheet of the library, with Longe throwing a Monster Energy drink from a car window at her as she walked home.
Prince hanged herself with an orange scarf that was a Christmas gift from her sister Lauren, who was 12 when she found the body.
Narey and Mulveyhill each admitted to misdemeanor criminal harassment in Hampshire Superior Court in Northampton and were handed a year of probation and 100 hours of community service with at-risk youth.
Both were banned from profiting in any way from the case relating to Prince.
Velazquez, Longe and Mullins were dealt with in juvenile court, and were each sentenced to one year of probation and up to 100 hours of community service.
In exchange, other charges including felony civil rights violations resulting in bodily harm and stalking were dropped.

Austin Renaud was charged with statutory rape in April 2010 in relation to the case, but following the resolution of the other five teens’ cases, Prince’s family requested to dismiss the charge.
The headmaster at the time of the incident, Dan Smith, retired from South Hadley High School at the end of the year, after working in the school system for more than 33 years.
The case horrified the nation, and led to unprecedented changes in anti-bullying legislation in Massachusetts and later in other states.
Narey was described by one of her former teachers as one of ‘the most obnoxious bullies in the class’ and as someone who ‘had a mean girl reputation by middle school’.
Prince’s mother described Narey as someone ‘not capable of compassion’, stating that she had ‘had the opportunity to put an end to Phoebe’s torment. But she was too weak of character to match Phoebe’s courage?
‘Why did Kayla not find the courage and compassion to help Phoebe? Kayla Narey is not capable of compassion.’

The then-teenager broke down after admitting her part in Prince’s death, claiming that her boyfriend had been her ‘priority’ over ‘her core values’.
She admitted to the court that she was ‘the weak one’, adding: ‘That behavior will always be with me. I’m sorry, Phoebe.
‘I am sorry about the unkind things I said. I’m sorry for what I wrote on my Facebook page.
‘Most of all I’m sorry for January 14, in the library and in the hallway, when I laughed when someone was shouting humiliating things at you. I am immensely ashamed of myself. My failure will always be with me.
‘I am immensely ashamed of myself,’ she went on. ‘I am sorry for my role in this tragedy and I am deeply sorry for what my behavior has caused my family, my loving friends and the South Hadley community.’
Prince’s family received $225,000 for the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination complaint they filed against the town of South Hadley and certain town officials.
The parties agreed to settle the matter out of court, and as part of the agreement, the defendants, School Superintendent Gus A. Sayer, South Hadley High School Principal Dan Smith, Vice Principal William Evans and the school system itself, were indemnified from any future legal action in the matter.
