Expert rates most popular celebrity cosmetic must-haves

With a glut of celebrity-endorsed beauty products on the market, loyal fans the world over are forking out thousands in a bid to look like their favourite A-lister.

But are they really worth the money?

Australian beauty expert Domenica Calarco recently checked out some of the most popular brands currently hitting cosmetic counters and offered her opinion as to which ones are worth splashing some cash on. 

Here, FEMAIL looks at what Domenica has to say about some of these in-demand collections – from Gigi’s Maybelline collaboration to Kylie’s ever-growing Lip Kit empire.

Kim Kardashian made her first foray into the world of beauty products this year with the launch of her contour kit – the sell out product making the mogul $10 million in just one day.

Though clearly a product that has plenty of hype, Domenica said the kit, which comes with four shades and a brush, didn’t warrant the $52 price tag.

‘Personally I don’t like this brush,’ she said, before addressing the product itself.

‘It’s a little bit powdery… it’s not that great a product.’

Kylie Cosmetics 

The youngest family member of the Kardashian/Jenner clan has developed a passion for the world of cosmetics and over the past year has made a fortune with her Lip Kit empire.

And if predicted sales figures are anything to go by her business is set to be worth $1 billion by 2020.

Domenica said the Lip Kits are great and that friends of hers ‘go crazy for them’ because of the impressively long-lasting formula.

‘They last through eating, drinking and everything,’ she said. 

At $28 the Lip Kits are far more affordable than many other celebrity endorsed/owned collections and come with both a lip liner and matte colour.

Kylie Cosmetics also offers a range of eyeshadow palettes, blushes and contour sets.

FENTY Beauty by Rihanna

Domenica raved about Rihanna’s new beauty range, FENTY Beauty by Rihanna, noting the singer made $72 million in her first month of sales.

‘There are actually 40 shades of foundation in this range… that was a really big selling point for Rihanna,’ Domenica said. 

‘She wanted to make a brand that women of all shades of skin and ethnicities could use.’

The beauty expert noted that although the products are priced at the higher end, the clever packaging and product formula lived up to all expectations.

Luma by Jessica Hart 

Domenica couldn’t sing the praises of Jessica Hart’s make up and skincare range highly enough, and said she was a ‘huge advocate for supporting Aussie brands’.

‘I really loved the oil she has come out with and the beauty serum,’ Domenica said.

Kora Organics by Miranda Kerr

Flying the flag for another great Australian product, the beauty professional also raved about this line of organic skincare by Australian model Miranda Kerr.

‘Her Noni face oil is what the whole range is around. I really do like it,’ she said. 

‘The products are very high quality, it’s great packaging and overall a very nice range to own.’

Victoria Beckham X Estee Lauder

Domenica said Victoria Beckham’s collaboration with Estee Lauder is ‘one of the best’.

The product, though priced between $70 to $100, was ‘pure luxury’, enthused the expert.

Domenica said the range has been so popular it sold out at all makeup counters across Sydney.

‘For something like Estee Lauder you know you are going to get really great product. The quality is really high end,’ she said.

Maybelline X Gigi Hadid (launch date December 9)

Maybelline have collaborated with model Gigi Hadid who has curated her own line of beauty products based on her favourite looks.

The range focuses on lip products, eye make up and contouring.

And while there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the range, Domenica said the product wasn’t new as such and that it had simply been rebranded with different packaging.

Domenica said it’s unlikely the make up is worth the inflated price as a mascara previously priced at $17 is expected to now retail for $24.

Tattoo artist turned make up guru Kat Von D comes highly rated by Domenica, especially for her eyeshadow palette, which she said is ‘really long wearing’.

‘Obviously she’s known for her tattoos so everything is really locked in and the make up is really full coverage,’ she said. 

Sold at Sephora, prices for the US product range from $20 – $50.
