Expert weighs the health benefits of A1 and A2 milk

  • A massive price difference and one component seperate the two types of milk
  • Regular A1 milk is cheaper and can have affects on the consumer’s health
  • Fancier A2 milk is from genetically tested cows and claims to be better option
  • Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki revealed truth behind whether A2 is worth the money

Supermarket fridges across Australia are bursting with countless milk options, making it difficult for consumers to identify the best product.

A humble bottle of milk, whether it be generic A1 or fancier A2, can set shoppers back as little as a $1 coin or as much as a $5 note, but many have questioned whether there is any difference besides the price tag.

The truth behind the more expensive A2 milk has been revealed, with one expert describing the benefits of elite diary as ‘a little murky’.

Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki said the one difference between the two milk types was the 67th amino acid - a component of milk - which can affect the consumer's health

Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki said the one difference between the two milk types was the 67th amino acid – a component of milk – which can affect the consumer’s health.

‘At this position, A1 has a histidine amino acid while A2 has a proline amino acid,’ he wrote for ABC News.

A1 milk has a ‘pesky’ histidine amino acid which breaks down into peptide BCM-7 and when they are consumed can affect blood pressure, immune system and how blood clots.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A1 AND A2 MILK

A1 MILK

  • ‘Ordinary’ milk
  • Cheaper – can cost $1/L
  • Contains histidine amino acid which breaks down to peptide BCM-7
  • The peptide can affect blood pressure, immune system and how blood clots when consumed

A2 MILK

  • ‘Fancier’ milk
  • More expensive – can cost  $2.40/L
  • Contains proline amino acid
  • Promoted as being gentler on the stomach and more digestible

‘Peptides can be quite wide-ranging and powerful in their effects,’ Dr Kruszelnicki said.

‘In rats it has been shown to have an analgesic effect or it can accelerate learning.’

A2 milk is also said to be more expensive because the cattle that produce the milk have to be genetically tested.

The New Zealand company founded A2 milk in 2000 and claim the product is more digestible than regular dairy.

While people believe normal A1 milk may cause type 1 diabetes, heart disease or lead to autism or schizophrenia, it has not been proven and has no supporting evidence.

Despite A2 milk being promoted to people who experience stomach pains with regular milk, Dr Kruszelnicki claimed there had been little studies to prove the theory.
