Explosion sparks huge blaze in Los Angeles oil refinery cooling tower as fire crews battle 100ft flames

Firefighters scrambled to a blaze at an oil refinery cooling tower in Los Angeles after explosions sent huge fireballs into the sky. 

The fire erupted at the Marathon Refinery in Carson on Tuesday at around 10:50pm and quickly tore through the building.

Crew from the Los Angeles County Fire Department raced to the scene to battle flames reaching 100ft.

No injuries have been reported and the oil refinery’s system had to be depressurized. The 405 Freeway was shut down on both directions.

Footage shows enormous flames and smoke billowing into the night sky as fire crew douse it with water.

Locals reported seeing ‘big fireballs in the sky’ and were forced to keep their windows and doors shut from thick smoke.  

Resident Pricilla Reyes told NBC Los Angeles that she heard ‘four or five explosions loud explosions’.

Michael Molina, a truck driver told the publication that the force of the blast shook his vehicle.
