Extraordinary act Victoria police will take as part of a pay fight with Jacinta Allan’s government – but Aussie drivers are going to love it

As part of looming industrial action police plan to warn lucky motorists in one state about the locations of speed cameras.

Victorian Police are demanding a $840million pay deal for its roughly 17,500 officers, including protective services officers (PSO) on public transport, in a protracted bitter dispute with Jacinta Allan’s state government.

As part of fresh industrial action for next week officers also plan to plaster slogans on vehicles, protest at government premises and put up posters at police stations.

Last month police union members voted to reject an offer of nine-hour shifts and nine-day fortnights as part of a $500million deal agreed to by the state government and the top ranks.

The deal would have delivered a 16 per cent pay rise and 22 extra days off per year on an ordinary roster.

Police are seeking six per cent annual pay rises over the next four years and 8.5-hour shifts giving them 14 days off a year.

The deal would add at least $210million to the force’s annual $3.2billion wages bill.

Previously police staged industrial action between December and May after their workplace agreement expired in November.

Union members voted to accept the introduction of nine-hour shifts by 2028 but 57 per cent of police later rejected the deal forcing parties back into negotiations.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said his union’s members felt undervalued.

‘Our members have seen other workers receiving higher pay rises and they feel that the nature and importance of their work to the community, should be held in the same regard and attract the same rewards,’ Mr Gatt told the Herald Sun.

He accused the state government and force command of playing hardball and ‘tearing up everything previously agreed to in the proposed EBA and sending negotiations back to square one’.

‘The Government has not increased its financial offer to police and PSOs,’ he said.

‘As a result, our Delegates have voted to resume phase 1 industrial action measures from next week and conduct a ballot of members regarding the escalation to phase 2 measures in coming weeks.’

The massively indebted state Labor government of Premier Jacinta Allan is also in protracted pay disputes with firefighters and paramedics.

At least one section of the public sector workforce is happy though, with nurses accepting a 28 per cent pay rise in June, which adds a massive $1billion to their wages.

However, this has become a benchmark for other emergency service workers to aim for.
