Extraordinary moment Channel 10 fail to address the elephant in the room during Mary Fowler interview – as loved-up star opens up on ‘great trip’ to Perth with Nathan Cleary

The nation was waiting with bated breath as Mary Fowler stepped in front of the cameras for the first time since going public with Nathan Cleary.

But Channel 10 failed to quiz the Matildas star on the romance that has got Australia talking on Wednesday.

Aussie sport’s hottest romance went public earlier today after Fowler, 20, and Cleary, 25, were pictured on an intimate date in a park in Perth.

They could be seen laying together in the middle of an open park by the water – laughing, hugging, chatting, and drinking from the same water bottle.

At one point, Cleary took his shirt off and Fowler lay on his chest.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson selected Fowler in his starting lineup for tonight’s game against Taiwan and broadcaster Channel 10 had the perfect opportunity to ask the Man City star about her blossoming romance before the game.

But instead, she was asked about her run of form with City, her new role on the wing and the strong support for the Matildas in Perth.

‘To see the amount of people coming out to support us has been incredible and they have been super loud so it has been a great trip and I think all of us will remember that,’ she said.

Fowler was asked about her new romance by Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday morning, but said: ‘Sorry, I just want to get back to my hotel.’

Cleary and Fowler first attracted attention as a potential couple when they were seen together on a leisurely walk along the Nepean River in Penrith in Sydney’s west.

The pair were then seen sharing an ice cream following a promotional event hosted by Adidas, a brand both athletes endorse.

Last Sunday, Cleary was photographed with two Matildas fans outside Optus Stadium just before the Aussies’ 8-0 victory over the Philippines, with Fowler scoring the opening goal.

Matildas supporter Annie Lewin shared the shot of Cleary with the caption ‘silly for the tillies’, giving the clearest indication to that point that there was a romantic connection between the pair.

Cleary had previously been partying with friends and family in Bali.

On Tuesday Daily Mail Australia’s exclusive photos showed the couple enjoying each other’s company and laughing after grabbing a takeaway coffee, with an onlooker describing their interaction as ‘low-key but cute’.

‘There was a guy that recognised him and they shook hands and Mary laughed, then they were just laughing and walking very close together,’ the passer-by said.
