Ezra Mam takes huge step to returning to footy after cops charged him with drug driving over head-on collision

  • Broncos star was involved in accident in October
  • He has since been charged with drug driving

Ezra Mam has checked out of rehab in a big step on his road back to the footy field after he was charged with drug driving by police when he allegedly failed a roadside drug test after a car crash in October.

The 21-year-old had admitted himself to the facility just under a month ago after he was involved in a road traffic incident in Brisbane that saw his Ford Ranger truck smash into an Uber in a head-on collision.

Mam returned home on Monday, having stayed in a wellness facility in Brisbane since October, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The outlet adds that Mam has paid more than $100,000 in fees for his stay in the wellness facility.

He was charged by police for driving while having a relevant drug in his blood system and driving while unlicensed after he had allegedly tested positive for an illegal drug following the crash.

The Brisbane star had been given a roadside drug test by police after the incident and had allegedly returned a positive test.

Mam was also handed a traffic infringement notice for failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

A mother and her daughter were riding as passengers in the Uber at the time the collision took place. The mother had claimed she and her four-year-old had been forced to attend hospital and claimed her daughter had suffered a broken hip in the collision.

It is understood that no pleas have been entered, with the NRL player due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 16.

Mam, who is signed to a four-year deal that is reportedly worth $4million, is ‘unlikely’ to make an appearance at the Broncos’ training ground in Red Hill until 2025.

‘I understand the seriousness of the situation,’ Mam told News Corp last week after the charges had been made against him.

‘I understand the importance in myself standing up to take responsibility for my actions.

‘I will cooperate with the legal process to come.

‘I also understand my responsibilities as a role model in the community and I’m prepared to work hard to live up to those expectations going forward.’

The NRL’s Integrity Unit have been investigating the matter. There is a chance they could suspend the halfback for at least two months and hand him a hefty fine.

The Broncos have already returned to pre-season training but Mam will not be in attendance as new boss Michael Maguire has been putting his troops through a rigorous training camp ahead of the commencement of the 2025 season.

Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy issued a statement on Mam’s situation: ‘The club was notified this afternoon that charges have now been laid.

‘We will respect the legal process and will continue to work with the NRL Integrity Unit on next steps, as this matter moves forward.

‘Ezra is currently seeking external support and we will give him the time and space to do so.

‘As the matter is now before the courts, we are unable to make further comment.’
