Facebook is testing a feature called ‘Sets’ like Pinterest

  • Facebook is now testing a feature called Sets on select users
  • People can share Sets with everyone, or just specific friends
  • Sets is aimed at offering another way for people to share hobbies

Facebook is testing a feature called ‘Sets’ that lets users share status updates, photos and videos in one post – just like Pinterest boards.

The new feature means people can create themed collections around their hobbies and share them with their friends.

Facebook is currently testing the feature with select users, and it is currently unknown when or if it will roll out globally.

WHAT ARE FACEBOOK ‘SETS’?

The new feature means people can create a themed collection and share them with everyone, or just specific friends.

Facebook is currently testing the feature in a few countries after trying to work out how to compete with Pinterest for years.

This can be based on a theme of their choice and by default are available to all the user’s Facebook friends.

Friends are defaulted to ‘following’ the Set so they keep seeing updates when it changes.

‘We’re testing a way for people to create sets of specific posts, photos and videos for just the friends that want to follow along’, a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch.

This can be based on a theme of their choice.

All friends are defaulted to ‘following’ the Set – this means they keep seeing updates when it changes.

The company is also testing ‘Secret Sets’ which are only visible to a selection of friends.

Facebook could monetise the feature by providing a special button with product ads, TechCrunch reports.

Those with access to the feature will see the option to create a Set on their profile.

Facebook has had success in building versions of its competitors’ features.

For example it has been aggressively pushing Stories onto all of its platforms.

In August, the company announced it was bringing Stories to the desktop.

Facebook has previously added stories to Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the Facebook mobile app, but this marked the first time the feature would be available on the desktop site.

Facebook Stories were introduced globally in March 2017 after testing the feature in Ireland.

Initially, users could only share to friends or groups of friends.

The feature was eventually updated to include public sharing – a move that some reviewers said caused their engagement to skyrocket higher than engagement on typical newsfeed posts.

Facebook has been contacted for comment.
