Facebook launches US food order and delivery service

  • The new service allows US to order from local eateries and national chains
  • Restaurant partners include Chipotle, Five Guys, Papa John’s and Jack in the Box
  • The company also signed on to combine a options from a number of food ordering services such as EatStreet, Delivery.com, DoorDash and Olo 

Facebook on Friday launched a service through which its US users can order food for take-away or delivery directly through its app or website.

Facebook said it has partnered with restaurants including Chipotle, Jack in the Box Inc, Five Guys, Papa John’s and Panera. 

The company has been testing the feature since last year, and after responding to feedback and adding more partners, it’s rolling out the service everywhere in the US on iOS, Android and desktop.

 

The options include local eateries as well as national chains, and users have the advantage of being able to read what friends and others Facebook users have to say about a particular restaurant before they place an order

HOW TO ORDER FOOD ON FACEBOOK  

To use the food delivery service, users have to the ‘order food’ section on Facebook’s explore menu, and a list of local and chain eateries appear. 

Each restaurants Facebook reviews and ratings are also available to the user. 

The user can then select a ‘pickup’ or ‘delivery’ option, and start an order at a restaurant. 

If the restaurant a user wants to place an order from offers takeout or delivery with multiple services, the user can select which service they’d like to use. 

And if a user doesn’t have an account with that service, they can sign up without leaving the Facebook app. 

The company said in a blog post that it has also signed on to combine a options from a number of food ordering services such as EatStreet, Delivery.com, DoorDash and Olo.

Users will have to go to the ‘order food’ section on Facebook’s ‘explore’ menu, which will show them a list of participating restaurants in the vicinity through which they can place their order.

The options include local eateries as well as national chains, and users have the advantage of being able to read what friends and others Facebook users have to say about a particular restaurant before they place an order. 

If the restaurant a user wants to place an order from offers takeout or delivery with multiple services, the user can select which service they’d like to use. 

For example, if a user has an account with Delivery.com, they can order with their existing login. 

And if a user doesn’t have an account with that service, they can sign up without leaving the Facebook app. 

A year back, the company has said its US users would be able to order food through a restaurants’ Facebook page.

Facebook’s shares were up nearly 1 percent in early trading on Friday. 

Shares of food order and delivery service GrubHub Inc dropped nearly 3 percent.

GrubHub’s shares had also dropped last month after Amazon Restaurants teamed up with Olo, whose network of restaurants includes Applebee’s and Chipotle.
