Fans calls for the Big Bash League to make a VERY controversial change – as star cricketer reveals the hilarious reason it’ll never work for him

  •  Calls grow for BBL to make big schedule switch
  •  Star batter Tom Rogers responded with funny remark
  •  However, other Big Bash players are open to the idea

Melbourne Stars opener Tom Rogers has revealed the hilarious reason he would likely miss any Christmas Day BBL matches, while others say they are ‘open’ to the concept as calls grow louder for more sport during the festive season.

Rogers and the Stars travelled to Sydney to face the Sixers on Boxing Day – one of two matches on that night – but selectors might have to look for a replacement if the BBL schedules matches on December 25 in the future

‘I physically don’t think my mum would let me,’ he said after his side’s breakthrough win.

‘I don’t think I’d be let out of the house if there were games on Christmas.

‘It’s a pretty special day, so you’d have to ask my mum.’

The BBL has resisted the urge to have games on Christmas despite the NBL biting the bullet last year with a game and another two played this year, with 8578 in the house to watch the Illawarra Hawks stun the Sydney Kings.

More than 16,000 fans attended the SCG on Tuesday, while 42,000 people saw the Scorchers beat the Renegades later that night.

While Boxing Day has traditionally been the biggest day on the cricketing calendar, the Hobart Hurricanes hosted BBL games on Christmas Eve in the previous two seasons, although there were no matches on December 24 this year.

Cricket Australia hasn’t ruled out Christmas games in the future, with the fairest solution to play a derby to limit interstate travel for the players.

Sixers skipper Moises Henriques isn’t opposed to the idea but says there are a number of factors that organisers must consider.

‘I’m definitely open to it, but I guess as players we’re in a pretty lucky position that we are maybe financially rewarded a bit better than some of the staff and all the other people that go out and make a game work,’ he said.

‘It’s a sacrifice for us as players, but there are so many people that make up a cricket game happen, so it’s not just us that’d be missing out on Christmas Day.

‘For a start, I think it’d have to be a derby in the same city where at least you can spend the morning or lunch with the family.

‘I’m open to anything that can potentially grow the game, but are people going to turn up on Christmas Day? That’s the other argument because I’m sure it’ll be watched on tele, but how big is the crowd going to be on Christmas Day? I just don’t know the answer.

‘It’s not just about what the players want. There are a lot of people that make a cricket match happen. Asking all of them to sacrifice a Christmas is (hard).

‘To be honest, maybe they’re not paid enough to sacrifice that. It’s a big ask and it’s a big sacrifice for a lot of people.’
