Fans go wild for radio commentary of Team GB’s Olympic swimming relay gold alongside Andy Murray and Dan Evans’ triumph in tennis… as they credit BBC Radio 5 Live for ‘a masterclass’

Listeners praised BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage of Team GB’s triumphs in the pool and on the tennis court on Tuesday night. 

Team GB scooped up a fourth gold medal as the men’s team retained their 4 x 200m freestyle relay title at a canter. 

While that was happening, Andy Murray and Dan Evans advanced into the quarter-finals of the men’s tennis doubles – but only after surviving two match points for Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.

Fans lauded the BBC’s radio commentary as the broadcasters captured two moments of sheer sporting brilliance with aplomb. 

‘Incredible broadcasting tonight. A masterclass,’ one listener wrote on Instagram.

Alistair Bruce-Ball was calling the strokes in the swimming while Jonathan Overend was on the mic for Murray and Evans’ win from the jaws of defeat.

Commentating on the final moments of the relay race, Bruce-Ball said: ‘And here he comes, Duncan Scott, to retain the title for Great Britain. 

‘It’s glorious gold once again. The first gold in the pool for Great Britain, a fourth at the Games. 

‘James Guy, Tom Dean, Matt Richards, and Duncan Scott do the business. What a fabulous performance on a night of thrilling drama.’

Meanwhile, this was Overend’s commentary of the climatic moments from the tennis: ‘Down the centre, defensive return, smash from Evans! Britain win!

Already, they had hoovered up the equestrian team eventing gold thanks to Tom McEwen, Ros Canter, and Laura Collett, the men’s cross-country mountain biking gold via a gritty comeback from Tom Pidcock, and the men’s trap shooting with record-breaker Nathan Hales.
