Royal Variety Performance viewers were left unimpressed when a new version of Three Lions was performed – despite England not winning the World Cup.

Lightning Seeds and David Baddiel and Frank Skinner appeared on the annual special on Tuesday and performed an updated version of their classic football hit.

The performance was pre-recorded weeks before the variety show with fans finding the rendition awkard since England didn’t emerge victorious from the World Cup.

Taking to Twitter during the show, one viewer said: ‘It’s not coming home so should’ve been left on the cutting room floor.’

Another added: ‘It’s Coming Home at The Royal Variety Performance… Umm.’

Another unimpressed viewer wrote: ‘Who knew that It’s Coming Home song could actually get worse, well it has.’

England reached the quarter finals of this year’s World Cup and were knocked out by France, with a final score of 2-0.

The cup was won by Argentina against France 4-2 on penalties following a 3–3 draw after extra time. 

Simon Cowell joined the likes of Ellie Goulding and Becky Hill on stage for an evening of theatrical celebration during the show.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex represented the Royal Family. In previous years it has been attended by the late Queen Elizabeth II and the now King Charles.

Omid Djalili, Eurovision’s Sam Ryder and Isabella and Daniela Munoz Landestoy with Gordon Marquez from the Giffords Circus were among the performances which will air on ITV for the show.

Performances also included a musical number from the cast of Cabaret and Fatma Said singing ‘O Mio Babbino as well as a special appearance from Nile Rodgers.
