Stephen A. Smith has compared Shedeur Sanders to Colin Kaepernick in a passionate post on X about the quarterback’s NFL Draft snub.

But the ESPN analyst undermined his point in the eyes of many of his followers by tagging a random X user called Shedeur Smith instead of the aspiring NFL player.

‘This is a damn disgrace,’ Smith wrote on X on Friday night. ‘How in the hell is @Shedeur not off the board, not drafted yet.’

Smith suggested it could do with teams disliking Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father, and said the situation also reminds him of Colin Kaepernick’s ongoing NFL absence. He hasn’t played since 2016 and is synonymous with taking the knee during the national anthem.

‘Y’all still think this doesn’t have anything to do with teams hatin on @DeionSanders,’ Smith continued.

‘This kid is a first rounder. In a different way, this is Kaepernick all over again…..being kept out. A damn disgrace. I don’t care what anyone says!’

However, the @Shedeur that Smith tagged was not the quarterback but a man who called Shedeur Smith who lives in Kellyville, Sydney.

It meant that most of the replies from Smith’s bold take were laughing at the error he made rather than discussing the topics he brought up.

‘You just tagged a random dude,’ said the popular College Sports Only account, while another said: ‘That’s not even his handle man. Get your reporting right!’

But the fans that engaged with the wider point Smith was making were also in disagreement.

In the weeks and months leading up to the Draft, there was increasing speculation that Sanders could fll down the order after reportedly giving a bad impression in meetings with multiple NFL teams.

Others, however, wondered if when it came down to it, teams would not want to risk passing on a quarterback talent.

For a long time, the New York Giants were strongly linked with taking him with their third pick but instead took egde rusher Abdul Carter.

But as one fan put it to Smith: ‘Just like Kaepernick, he’s a backup quarterback, and he’s not good enough to justify the circus and drama that he will bring to the locker room.

And his interview was shockingly bad and turned off a lot of people. It sounds like a lot of teams simply removed him from their draft boards.

And don’t try and blame racism when Mike Tomlin (the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach) has passed up on him twice. Is Mike Tomlin racist?’

The Draft continues on Saturday, with Rounds 4-7 starting from 12.
