  • Lionel Messi has won a fan vote for Champions League goal of the tournament
  • However, Cristiano Ronaldo won the official UEFA award. So whose was better?
  • Messi scored an amazing free-kick, while Ronaldo pulled off a spectacular volley

The eternal battle between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo rages on, as fans have voted Messi’s free-kick against Liverpool as the Champions League goal of the tournament.

The news comes just a day after UEFA’s official ‘technical observers’ voted Ronaldo’s volley against Manchester United as goal of the tournament.

The group of technical observers featured the likes of former Manchester United manager David Moyes, current England boss Gareth Southgate, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez. So, do they know better than the fans?

Lionel Messi’s strike from 30 yards helped Barcelona to a 3-0 win at the Nou Camp in the Champions League semi-final. However, we all know how Barcelona’s trip to Anfield ended up.

Fans were left open-mouthed as the free-kick curled into the top corner past Alisson’s outstretched arm, and Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand were famously caught going wild at the outrageous goal.

Ronaldo’s goal came in second place, when he pulled off an amazing first time volley with the ball dropping over his head.

Third in the fan vote was Ivan Rakitic’s goal for Barcelona against Tottenham in the group stage, where he caught the ball sweetly from outside the box.

Fourth in the fan vote was Arjen Robben’s goal against Benfica, a magnificent solo effort where he weaved his way into the box and smashed it into the top corner.

Ronaldo will argue he won the official vote, a feat he also achieved last year, but others will say that Messi deserves the award for having the most popular goal.

The only thing for certain is that the war between these two special players will go on for a few more years yet.
