Fashion Critical reviews the best and worst of Oscars fashion 2022

The 94th Academy Awards were marred by scandal with a physical confrontation between comedian Chris Rock and actor Will Smith making international headlines but before they even walked onto the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles there was plenty of scandalous outfits on the red carpet.

Fashion Critical, a mysterious fashion troll on Facebook who is believed to be from Australia, was there to round up all of the action post-event with a 51-picture gallery outlining the best – and worst – dressed celebrities on the day.

From Kristen Stewart’s ‘slap in the face’ choice to wear a blazer and shorts to the glittering night of nights to Nicole Kidman’s ‘cloud-like’ gown, the online critic hit the mark on their hilarious hot take of the season’s fashion.

WORST ON THE RED CARPET

Nicole Kidman, 54, failed to impress Fashion Critical in a sky blue Armani Prive gown featuring a voluminous peplum waist and a fitted skirt.

‘She looks a little like it’s falling off her tiny frame. I also love her in a bolder colour against her beautiful pale skin,’ they said.

Jada Pinkett Smith chose a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture in a deep green hue that the critic likened to ‘a scrunched up Easter egg wrapper’ but it was Kristen Stewart’s attempt at cool casual that got her completely worked up.

Spencer star Kristen Stewart was shot down by Fashion Critical immediately: ‘I haven’t been this upset since Bec Hewitt wore shorts to the races. I don’t care who you are, if you’re on the Oscars red carpet, you PUT ON PANTS, BUTTON UP YOUR SHIRT and DO YA HAIR,’ they wrote

Penelope Cruz donned Chanel Haute Couture

Amy Schumer

Unfortunately Amy Schumer (right) was characterised as ‘boobs in a bow’ for her red carpet attempt on the celebrity night of nights

'When you get a gift voucher to Aje and can't make a decision so you buy four dresses and sew them together. IS THIS NOT 4 x AJE DRESSES?' Fashion Critical wrote of the disappointing display Billie Eilish put on

Travis Barker and fiancee Kourtney Kardashian also attended the Oscars

The duo went in for one of her racy kisses

Surprise appearances from Kourtney Kardashian, 42, and Travis Barker, 46, who were at the Oscars for the first time, saw FC ask: ‘How did THESE TWO get a guernsey??’

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Schiaparelli Haute Couture

Meanwhile Billie Eilish, who arrived with her brother Finneas, donned an eye-catching ruffled black Gucci gown with jet black hair that really missed the mark on the night.

Amy Schumer opted for a statement making silver and black embellished ribbon accent that earned her zero points on the fashion front, with the critic calling it ‘BEWWWWBS all wrapped up in a bow’. Venus Williams’ drop neck Dolce and Gabbana moment earned a similar title.

Jada Pinkett Smith chose a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture in a deep green hue that the critic likened to 'a scrunched up Easter egg wrapper'

Meanwhile Fashion Critical said of Wesley Snipes: ‘By the POWER OF GREYSKULL! Wesley Snipes is still alive!! He’s certainly made an entrance with this 36 piece suit’.

Marlee Maitlin ‘somehow Benjamin Buttoned herself into an 18-year-old glamazon’ on the celebrity night-of-nights.

‘I think she’s so beautiful. The dress I am meh about but I must issue a stern violation for that necklace choice. Consider this a formal warning,’ the critic said of the bold blue choice.

Olivia Colman’s ‘tinfoil dress’ didn’t do the talented actress any favours while Serena Williams’ gloves and ‘clod hoppers’ combo fell well short.

BEST ON THE RED CARPET

Arguably one of the ‘best on ground’ for Fashion Critical was Jessica Chastain, 45, who arrived in a striking rose gold and lavender ombre Gucci frock, which highlighted her waist.

The movie star’s sleeveless gown featured sequins throughout for a sparkling touch. ‘She is a majestic princess! And ready to enter the Venetian Waltz on Dancing with the Stars at a moment’s notice,’ the critic wrote.

The red haired actress was joined on the carpet by her husband of five years, Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, who also looked dapper in a navy hued suit.

The British actress chose a low-cut floral number in the pastel hue

She added matching platform heels and a statement diamond necklace

British actress Lily James wowed in a pale pink number by Atelier Versace, highlighting her slim frame and her toned legs, but Fashion Critical couldn’t deny their distaste for lace. ‘You know how I feel about lace. I do not care for it, let alone in nanna’s lingerie pink. Can’t deny she looks stunning though,’ they wrote

Mila Kunis was dubbed 'magnificent' in a rose-coloured dress next to her husband Ashton

Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair

Olivia Colman’s ‘tinfoil dress’ didn’t do the talented actress any favours but wasn’t a complete write off while Sophie Hunter (left) looked ‘ethereal’

Kirsten Dunst rocked a crimson gown for a red-hot arrival that scored her major fashion points, but the critic ‘would have liked to see a few diamonds around her bare neck’.

Laverne had on a velvet gown with a massive shoulder throw

Maddie Ziegler also rocked a voluminous dress

Rosie Perez ‘looked the same but terribly elegant’ in her red frock, Vanessa Hudgens was ‘stunning and inoffensive’ in black glitter and Zendaya was ‘divine’ in her top and skirt combination.

‘I absolutely ADORE this. Few could get away with it but she looks stunning,’ FC wrote on the Dune actress.

Zoe Kravitz’ baby pink gown was dubbed ‘terribly sweet and Audrey Hepburn’ like.

‘I love how she swings between so many different looks. That’s what FARSHUN is all about folks,’ the critic said.
