A father, who is accused of strangling his 19-year-old daughter to death before trying to kill his ex-partner, has appeared in court via video link.

Richard Kray is alleged to have strangled Olivia Kray, 19, to death at Westlands Caravan Park near Herne Bay, Kent, on July 21.

The 63-year-old is also accused of the attempted murder of Damyantee Cowan, who is in her 60s, at her home in Gordon Road, Herne Bay, on the same day. She was also a victim of strangulation.

Kray appeared at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent today via TV link with the Trevor Gibbens psychiatric unit in the town.

White-haired and bearded Kray spoke only to confirm his name, and to thank Judge Philip Statman at the end of the hearing.

He had been due to enter pleas to the charges but Sara Haroon, defending, told Judge Statman that her client was still being medically assessed.

But, a preliminary trial date has already been set for January 15 next year. It is expected to last two weeks.

Judge Statman ordered that a pre-trial review be held on December 11, and remanded Kray back into custody.

Olivia, described by a friend as a ‘beautiful young lady’, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A former primary school friend, Jade Blackmer, described Olivia at the time of her death as ‘caring, quiet and polite’.

‘She was very reserved and conscious of others. She didn’t smile often but when she did it lit up the room,’ said Ms Blackmer.

‘It’s such a tragedy this has happened to such a young and beautiful lady.’
