A father was caught on camera getting blasted in the face by an exploding watermelon as he attempted to tie elastic bands around it.
The footage was recorded at the family’s home in Fukuoka in Kyushu, Japan, as part of an experiment to burst the melon.
In the video, the father, Kubo, is kneeling behind a small wooden table with the fruit resting gently on a plate.
It is thought that at least 800 elastic bands are already in place around the centre of the fruit to create pressure.
His little girl, Na-chan, is sat nearby watching on but appears to get bored of the experiment and walks away.
But undeterred Kubo continues to struggle to place yet another elastic band around the circumference.
Suddenly, the watermelon explodes and blasts him in the face.

The man laughs before sitting up and catching his breath.
He gets back to his knees and raises the remaining half of the watermelon to his mouth with both hands before taking a bite out of it.

The exploding-watermelon challenge has been around since 2012 but became popular a few years after in 2016.
The pressure caused by placing elastic bands around the circumference causes the outer rind to deform and lose its rigidity.
The fruit then begins to bulge both above and below the bands as the flesh inside also gets squeezed.
Eventually, the structure completely collapses which causes it to burst.
The number of elastic bands need to cause the explosion varies depending on the size and ripeness of the individual watermelon.
