Fatigued truck driver sways uncontrollably between lanes on NSW’s M1 motorway

Dash-cam footage on NSW’s M1 motorway in between Morisset and Newcastle has captured the moment when a truck driver has swerved erratically, almost jack-kniving the b-double.

Moments before impact, the truck can be seen driving in the left lane before swerving into the side barrier. The driver immediately tries to pull itself back into the lane however struggles to regain balance at such high speeds.

As the truck driver slams on the brakes and pulls across to the right, the back side of the b-double frantically sways in and out of the lane as the driver attempts to regain control of the over-sized vehicle.

The truck makes a lucky escape, as his back load balances solely on its back wheel, nearly missing a dangerous roll.

Whilst the initial cause of the dangerous maneuver, witness Martin Urane claims that the truck driver was driving erratically and driving up on a single wheel before veering off into the left lane.

The near miss left witnesses shocked, yet fortunately there was no traffic obstructing the out of control truck. 

He told nine.com.au ‘it was pretty scary. I’ve seen truckies drift into the other lane but I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

The incident occurs after fatigue weighs in as one of the three big killers on NSW roads, as according to NSW Centre for Road Safety, ‘being awake for about 17 hours has a similar effect on performance as a blood alcohol content of 0.05’.

It marks as a reminder to utilize the stop, revive, survive initiation with over 80 rest stops operating throughout NSW, recommending that drivers take a break every two hours.
