FBI head and James Comey hit back at Trump over comments

The FBI fired back at President Trump’s comments against the Bureau on Sunday, saying that any suggestions agents aren’t committed are ‘simply false.’ 

On Sunday Trump took to Twitter to lash out at the FBI and say its reputation is in ‘tatters’.  

He blamed former FBI director James Comey – who he fired in May. 

‘After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness,’ he wrote.  

Later Sunday afternoon the head of the FBI Agents Association Thomas O’Connor hit out at Trump’s criticism, saying that every day agents put their lives on the line.

‘Every day, FBI Special Agents put their lives on the line to protect the American public from national security and criminal threats,’ O’Connor wrote on Twitter. 

‘Agents perform these duties with unwavering integrity and professionalism and a focus on complying with the law and the Constitution. 

‘This is why the FBI continues to be the premier law enforcement agency in the world. FBI Agents are dedicated to their mission; suggesting otherwise is simply false.’ 

Comey also quickly shot back at the tweet: writing: ‘I want the American people to know this truth: The FBI is honest. The FBI is strong. And the FBI is, and always will be, independent.’

The regulations put in place by the bureau permit individuals to ‘privately and publicly’ speak on ‘political subjects and candidates,’ while they are forbidden from working for political campaigns. 

Trump’s came after a report that special counsel Robert Mueller removed FBI agent Peter Strzok, the deputy head of counterintelligence, who also took lead in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, from his team for making potentially anti-Trump remarks.

Mueller is currently heading up an investigation into alleged ties between the Trump 2016 presidential campaign team and Russia.   

Mueller spokesman Peter Carr previously confirmed Strzok’s leave in a statement to The Hill.

‘Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the Special Counsel’s Office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation,’ Carr said.

‘Lisa Page completed her brief detail and had returned to the FBI weeks before our office was aware of the allegations.’

The reports were released after Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty in federal court for lying to the FBI over an exchange with the Russian ambassador.
