FBI release trove of evidence from 2011 Tucson massacre

The FBI has just released thousands of new photos and video from its investigation into the 2011 shooting in Tucson that left six people dead and 13 injured, including former US Rep. Gabby Giffords.

One of the photos shows Pima County Sheriff’s deputies pinning lone gunman Jared Loughner to the ground after he targeted Giffords on January 8, 2011 at a meet your constituent event.

Giffords was Loughner’s main target at the event outside a Safeway supermarket and she was left partially paralyzed on the right side of her body as a result.

Most of the photos published on the FBI’s website on Wednesday show belongings left behind at the crime scene, including cell phones, jewelry and clothing. 

One of the videos is of surveillance taken from inside the store moments before the shooting that shows a hooded Loughner walking around inside and buying a bottle of water.   

Among those killed were 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, US District Court Judge John Roll and Giffords’ aide Gabe Zimmerman. 

Loughner took a plea deal to escape the death penalty.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for the mass shooting.

The FBI said it contacted all of the victims and their families prior to publicly releasing the photos and video related to their investigation.   

Loughner was found to have fired off 33 shots in the parking lot outside the supermarket.

One bullet hit Giffords from three feet away, nearly killing her.

Since recovering from the attempted assassination, Giffords has become an influential gun control activist, who supports Second Amendment rights but calls for common sense gun reform.
