FDA approves first-ever vaccine for RSV virus which kills 10,000 Americans every year

The first ever vaccine against a common winter virus has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Arexvy targets Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which kills about 10,000 Americans every year and is most dangerous in older adults and young children.

It works by exposing the immune system to proteins from the surface of the virus, which trigger the production of antibodies against the disease.

Scientists have struggled to develop a vaccine against the virus for years amid multiple setbacks in trials. The disease returned with a vengeance last winter amid the relaxation of Covid restrictions.

The first ever vaccine against a common winter virus has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA gave the green light today for the vaccine to be administered to adults aged 60 years and older.

Other RSV vaccines are in development for children, with one developed by Pfizer expected to be approved later this year.

Developed by GSK, the vaccine is given as a single dose.
