Fear The Walking Dead: Morgan Jones fails to stop nuclear missile attack by cult leader Teddy Maddox

Missiles exploded and characters vaporized into dust after being exposed to radiation on Sunday’s shocking season finale of Fear The Walking Dead on AMC.

Morgan Jones, the ringleader of the good survivors, failed to stop cult leader Teddy Maddox from launching devastating nuclear weapons.

The episode titled The Beginning opened with Rachel, survivor of the outbreak, frantically trying to change a tire on her truck while also comforting a crying baby.

When she radioed on her walkie-talk for help, she heard a loud bang outside and saw the missile climbing in the sky.

She then heard Morgan’s voice coming through the walkie-talkie and learned about the impending doom heading her way.

‘I’m still going to try to stop what Teddy started but I am not entirely sure that’s going to be possible,’ Morgan’s voice said. ‘If you see the missile. It is going to reenter the atmosphere and it has got multiple warheads.’

Morgan continued ‘This might be all the time we have left. So you should use it. You should make it mean something.’

Rachel vowed that ‘This is not the end.’

She went back and tried to fix the truck tire but pulled the wheel’s frame so hard that the truck came off its jack and crashed down on her leg splitting her bone. With her leg bloody and her bone sticking out, she crawled and managed to grab a stick and fashioned a splint to hold her leg together.

As the missile flew overhead, she crawled away from the truck collapsing onto the ground after a few steps cradling her baby and said ‘I’m sorry. I can’t do it.’

She told the baby it was the end for her but not for the baby. Then she tied the baby’s backpack to her dog Rufus and grabbed her knife and stabbed herself in the stomach.

Meanwhile, Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) and his crew rushed to find safety after the missile’s launch. Wes (Colby Hollman) also had with him Riley [Nick Stahl], chief member of the cult, in a truck. They announced that they had found a safe spot, the bunker where Alicia Clark [Alycia Debnam-Carey] was being held. Riley’s face had blood and cuts and he appeared to have been tortured.

‘It’s funny what you can get a true believer to spill when you pull him away from his leader,’ said one of the men.

Daniel told them he had another option for them to hide out the blast.

He told them he heard Morgan’s voice giving them coordinates to go for a safe place. Daniel, though, seemed confused over what he heard. The group decided instead to go with Riley’s bunker idea and shortly after their truck broke down and they were descended upon by zombies.

Sarah Rabinowitz [Mo Collins] , another survivor of the outbreak, jumped out of the truck to fix the breaks. Jacob Kessner (Peter Jacobson) told her she would be reunited with her adoptive brother Miller.

They soon learn the men weren’t directing them to safety but were traitors. Charlie [Alexa Nisenson] turned her gun on Riley after she caught him reaching for her weapon. Riley admitted that they were not trying to take the group to a safe place.

‘We were all just driving you all someplace where you would have a prime view,’ Riley said. ‘Nobody’s going anywhere.’

Daniel told the group again about ‘the coordinates, we can still find it.’ They decided to put their trust back in Daniel and drove to the location that he suggested.

Meanwhile, Dwight (Austin Amelio) and his wife Sherry (Christine Evangelista) were also looking for safety on horseback to escape the missile. Sherry saw a house and decided they should go and look inside for beer and pretzels.

‘It’s the one thing we said we were going to do if we found each other again,’ she said. ‘If this really is the end, then this is how I want to go out. Just us.

In the house, Sherry said she wasted so much time ‘fighting the bad guys.’ She regretted that it cost her time she could have spent with Dwight.

Dwight told her she had nothing to be sorry for. The residents of the house, a couple with a child, appeared and Dwight and Sherry pulled their guns. They told them they had a storm shelter out back and were prepared to go in when these ‘jackasses’ showed up and took it.

Dwight determined that their cellar had been taken over by members of the cult and told them that he would get it back for them. Sherry and Dwight trained their guns on the shelter, pulled the door off and then shot the individuals who fled the shelter. Afterwards, they hunkered in the shelter with the family.

With the missiles in the air, cult leader Teddy Maddox and Dakota [Zoe Margaret Colletti] sped away in a truck from the submarine. Teddy turned on the radio and heard Morgan’s message that was being broadcast about finding safety.

‘Idiot,’ Teddy said as he turned off the radio.

Dakota apologized to him about saving Morgan. Teddy told her he wasn’t mad and that he was glad how things happened.

‘Or else I might not have ever met you,’ Teddy said. He told Dakota that she really gets him and understands what he is trying to do. Teddy and Dakota got out of the car to watch the missile landing.

‘Front row seats,’ said Teddy.

Moments later, John Dorie Sr. [Keith Carradine] pulled a gun on Teddy.

‘Step away from the girl,’ he said. He told Dakota that he wanted to talk to her. He said you can still make your life mean something.

‘I forgive you for killing John and taking my son’s life,’ John told her as he dropped his gun to the ground.

Teddy turned to shoot him, but just then June Dorie [Jenna Elfman] stepped out of their police cruiser and shot the gun out of Teddy’s hand. She also told Dakota she forgave her too.

John brushed Teddy’s gun aside, kicking off dirt that revealed they were standing on the bunker.

‘Looks like you were planning on sticking around,’ John said to Teddy.

Dakota was shocked and questioned Teddy. He told her he just wanted to survive to go back and shoot off the rest of the missiles. John told Dakota that Teddy was only saving her because he needed two people to launch the missiles.

‘He doesn’t care about you,’ said John. ‘He will kill you when this is over.’

Dakota, with her gun drawn, didn’t know who to trust.

In another location, Victor Strand [Colman Domingo] found an office building brimming with zombies. He shot as many as he could then climbed to the top level of the building. Victor heard singing and walked up another level and entered a pristine room.

A man pulled a gun on him and asked him ‘how did you get past the dead I let in.’ Victor and the man knew the missiles were headed towards them and Victor told him there was nothing more they could do.

The man said ‘I guess that’s the ball game’ and then offered Victor a 25-year-old bourbon. The man told him he was a historian and used to teach at University of Texas. The man had gathered records, artwork and other artifacts. Victor noticed the man had a religious necklace that was similar to one he once had.

Victor told the man that he had been trying to build a future and that he almost stopped the others who were trying to end the world. He said it came down to two men who had to give their lives to save everyone, but that ‘when push came to shove, one of them couldn’t do it.’

‘He wanted to survive,’ said Victor.

The man asked him which one he was and Victor told him that he was the one that was ready to die. Victor told him something led him to this building. The man told him that he was called Howard and that he wished he met him sooner. Then Victor told him that his name was ‘Morgan Jones.’

The real Morgan, it was revealed, was still in the command center of the submarine USS Pennsylvania frantically trying to stop the missile. Grace Mukherjee [Karen David] was with him and told him that he needed to give up. Grace told him that they didn’t know where all the warheads would hit, but regardless that they wouldn’t want to live in a world with all that potential radiation. Grace told him that she didn’t want to watch that happen to someone she loved.

Morgan then reached over and kissed Grace. He told her he loved her and Grace told him ‘I know.’ She put her gun in front of him and told him she didn’t want to watch someone she loved die again from radiation. Morgan said he had hoped he would be a husband and father again.

‘The warheads are separating, we don’t have much time,’ Grace said, who added that she heard her dead baby crying.

Morgan picked up the gun and said ‘I’m sorry it has to end that way.’ Then they put their heads together and he put the gun to the back of his head. Then he also heard a baby cry coming through the loudspeakers.

They went outside and saw Rachel zombie being pulled by her dog with her baby still alive in a satchel on her back.

Morgan took the baby and held him in arms and said it felt like a gift.

Daniel and his group reached the location of the coordinates but there was nothing there. Riley, who was still alive in the truck, told them ‘I told you there was no escaping.’ But just then a helicopter appeared over the horizon. The pilot told them not to ask them any questions.

Dakota still had her gun pointed at John, but June shot it out of her hand. John and June fled and got into the shelter, while above ground Dakota shot Teddy multiple times.

‘Now you will never get to see your ending,’ Dakota said.

Just then the missile exploded and Dakota was instantly evaporated. Daniel and his group were able to board the helicopter. Before they flew away, they spray painted on the ground ‘This Isn’t the End’ as Riley now a zombie walked into the field.

Morgan, Grace, with the baby and the dog tried to outrun the blast from the missile. They hunkered under a car outside of the submarine.

Victor and his new friend Howard watched the blast from the office building and appeared to be left unharmed.

‘After everything I did, I am still here,’ said Victor. ‘I’m not the man I told you I was. I’m the other one. I am Victor Strand.’

Victor told him he did what he needed to do to survive. He said they can take the future behind them and rebuild.

‘It feels like the dawning of the new day to me, how about you?’ Victor said as the mushroom cloud grew in the distance.

The show ended with Morgan cradling the baby next to Grace in front of the submarine as more blasts could be heard in the distance.
