Fears for Sunrise star Monique Wright as she crashes her scooter live on-air in a segment gone wrong while co-host Matt Shirvington watches on in horror

Sunrise descended into chaos on Friday morning when a segment about e-scooters ended in near disaster for co-host Monique Wright.

The 51-year-old fan favourite was testing a new model of the motorised vehicle in the studio alongside co-host Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington when she lost control.

Monique avoided serious injury by throwing the scooter to the floor after it appeared to accelerate away from her.

The breakfast show star, who wore a safety helmet for the segment, then collided with the wall of the Sunrise set.

‘I’m a stuntwoman,’ a stunned Monique announced, adding, ‘I’m so glad I had my [crash] hat on.’

Shirvo rushed over to his co-host after her collision, which she quickly laughed off.

Just moments earlier, Monique was complaining that her crash helmet had ruined her ‘look’.

‘I spent an hour getting my hair done this morning,’ she told viewers.

After Monique’s mishap, Sunrise consumer correspondent Shaun White said he wanted to ’emphasise’ that e-scooters were ‘safe’.

‘By the way, Mon has never tried a scooter, and we haven’t trained her,’ he said.

Monique bravely tried to remount her scooter, but as the segment ended she seemed to be still struggling with the contraption.

Meanwhile, Shirvo appeared to be perfectly home on his e-scooter during the segment.

The 46-year-old former athlete could be seen happily zooming around the Sunrise set at high speed.

It comes after loyal Sunrise fans recently speculated that longtime co-host Natalie Barr is preparing to retire.

Natalie, 56, is currently reporting in Washington DC, for the presidential election, while Monique is guest hosting alongside Shirvo.

While Monique steps in for Natalie on the Channel Seven breakfast show, viewers have suggested that the brunette may be retiring.

‘Monique is so excellent – I love how much they use her on the weekday show now,’ one fan gushed on Media Spy.

‘Could she be next [to become host] and Nat be retiring soon?’ someone asked.

However, one dedicated Sunrise enthusiast dismissed the rumours.

‘I don’t see Nat retiring soon,’ they wrote.

‘Sunrise is just doing what they’ve always done – building a strong b-team so presenters can slot easily in and out without missing a beat.

‘While I think Mon is great, I personally think she’s happier on weekends and just filling in where needed.

The user then weighed in on their preferred replacement if Nat were to ever retire.

‘I think the eventual replacement will come in the form of someone younger like a Sarah Greenhalgh or Teegan Dolling (down the line of course),’ they added.
