Fears grow for swimmer, 38, who disappeared in a river

  • Swimmer rushed into river at campsite near Cowra, New South Wales yesterday
  • His son was saved by a kayaker but the father never resurfaced and is missing 
  • Search resumed about 7am today with assistance from the Police Dive Unit

Police divers are searching a river for a swimmer who disappeared after rushing into the water to save his 9-year-old son from drowning.

The 38-year-old went into the Lachlan river at the Gerties camping area near Cowra, New South Wales at 6pm yesterday.

He was seen to disappear underwater and not resurface. His son was rescued by a kayaker.

Police searched last night until 10.30pm assisted by State Emergency Service.

The search resumed about 7am today with assistance from the Police Dive Unit.

The waterways guide describes Gertie’s camping area as ‘isolated and out of season often deserted.’

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
