FEMAIL taste tests Intergalactic Coke with surprising results

FEMAIL’s Bridie Pearson-Jones tried the Intergalactic Coca-Cola – with VERY surprising results

I can’t quite put my finger on what this Coke taste like –  it’s both familiar and like something I’ve never had before.

I think I recognise the flavours but I’m not used to it in drink form!

Is it bubblegum? Is it candy floss? Is it just that general chemical sweet aspartame?

Starting with the can itself, it’s certainly very pretty and would certainly stand out of a shelf.

It’s pink and purple with sparkles (although I’m no 100 per cent sure I’d know it isn’t regular coke if I spotted it in a shop).

Once opened,  it definitely has a sweet smell not unlike regularly Diet Coke,  but it’s almost like a a slightly old or flat can.

I’d read other reviews that said it tasted like marshmallow and candy floss  and was expecting an overly sweet saccharine smell- but it was quite muted.

There’s definitely a faint smell of candy floss – but it smells it’s coming from a distance away, it also reminded me of buttery popcorn, basically like you’re walking through a fun fair and sugar is burning somewhere.

In taste,  it’s not the same as a usual coke for sure, it has the reddish hue of a Ribena of fizzy Vimto. It’s not bright red like cranberry juice, more of a blackcurrant colour, I’m guessing Coke are hoping it reminds people of the red planet!

The taste is also blackcurrant like too. I definitely prefer other Coke flavours though – this has noting on Cherry or Vanilla.

The texture and level of fizz is similar to a normal Diet Coke but the sweetness is different and it’s less acidic.

It tastes fruitier and more syrupy – almost like a full sugar coke (but with the flatness of Diet Coke). And it tasted like there was a a separation between the water and sugar.

I definitely wouldn’t trade my beloved Diet Coke for this – it’s not bad at all but almost tastes like an off-brand cola or a kid’s SodaStream experiment mixing Vimto and Diet Coke.  Or if someone slightly merry tried to mix loads of flavours at a Coke freestyle machine.

It actually reminded me slightly of Haribo star mix, I can imagine this is what it would taste like if a sweet brand were to release a drink.

Intergalactic Coke is definitely fun and worth picking up for something fun and new to try – but it’s not going to replace a classic can.
