The Times of India asked why the woman had been detained when she had not been charged with a crime.

A police spokesman told the newspaper the girl would be freed after officers spoke to her parents to determine if she ‘was under any kind of pressure in the relationship.’

The couple, who are both in their 20s, were released from custody after her parents arrived.

All four officers have since been suspended and an inquiry has been launched into their conduct, Prashant Kumar, the additional directional general of police in Meerut, confirmed.
