Fenerbahce are increasingly confident of reaching agreement with Aston Villa for defender Diego Carlos.

Mail Sport reported on Monday how Jose Mourinho’s side were hoping to finalise a £10million deal for the 31-year old centre back who has just 18 months left on contract, and talks are advancing.

Villa are working hard to find another defender too as they have Pau Torres out injured for eight weeks.

Indeed, manager Unai Emery said only last week that he was relying on the experience of Carlos.

‘We need a centre back like him after Pau Torres’ injury,’ Emery said. ‘We now have three [centre backs]. We are working with Lamare Bogarde, his versatility can help us. We have Sil [Swinkels] in the squad as well, but the idea is to let him go on loan and play. Diego Carlos is necessary.’

Villa have asked about versatile Spain international defender Oscar Mingueza at Celta Vigo and Brazilian full back Wesley Franca at Flamengo while they have also spoken to Kasimpasa about Turkey Under-21 international Yasmin Ozcan.

Diego Carlos was a target for Fulham last summer and Villa were prepared to sell but ultimately didn’t receive an offer they felt suitable. Fulham then switched to Joachim Andersen from Crystal Palace.

Villa, meanwhile, are continuing negotiations with Borussia Dortmund for winger Donyell Malen.
