The new FIFA world cup ball looks normal on the outside – but in the inside it is so much more.

The ball, which will make its debut in tonight’s first semi final between Spain and Sweden, was unveiled by adidas in Sydney on Monday.

For the first time in FIFA Women’s World Cup istory, Connected Ball technology will be used in the final stages of the tournament. 

Combining player position data with AI, the innovation contributes to FIFA’s semi-automated offside technology and has been key to supporting in match decisions. 

Enhancing the overall fan viewing experience the technology offers accurate measurement of in-play data – including the ball speed, spin and distance the ball travelled before hitting the back of the net to watching fans.

The outside of the ball pays homage to the hosting nations, Australia and New Zealand.

It features a decoration of blues and greens, inspired by the unique Australasian landscape, with visuals nodding to the vast mountains of New Zealand and Australia’s connection with the Indian Ocean.

It is also inspired by the sunsets of the Sydney skyline, the finals ball is finished in glistening orange and gold detailing – the later also representing the ultimate prize of the winner’s trophy.

The updated hues provide a fresh backdrop for the cultural markings – developed by local artists Chern’ee Sutton and Fiona Collis – seen on the ball used for the group stages of the tournament.

She added all eyes will be on Sydney – and the gamechanging ball as the tournament comes to a close.
