Fifth of new companies founded by all-female bosses: Generation Z takes the lead as women launch record number of new firms

Women are setting up more companies than ever, with a fifth of new firms founded by all-female top teams.

NatWest boss Alison Rose said women are making advances in the business world – four years after her Rose Review laid bare barriers faced by female entrepreneurs.

Women launched 151,600 firms in 2022, the highest on record and almost three times as many as in 2018.

There was a particular jump in firms set up by Generation-Z women, between 16 and 25 years old, with the number rising by a quarter.

Rose’s 2019 review found 13 per cent of senior people on UK investment teams were women, while almost half had no women.

The latest report found one in five start-ups had all female directors last year, up from 16 per cent in 2018.

Rose said the findings in her latest report were a ‘testament to the resilience’ of women in business.
