Filming for BBC Two’s Inside No. 9 is set to stop after its ninth series launch and Christmas special episode.

The hit dark comedy series features some of Britain’s biggest names in film and TV including Sheridan Smith, the late Helen McCrory, Alison Steadman and more. 

But creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have decided it is ‘a good time’ to put a stop to it once filming finishes next year.

Speaking to The Sun, Steve, 55, said: ‘We feel it is a good time to pause Inside No9 after we finish filming series nine next year.’

The acting pair also created British sitcom The League of Gentlemen, which watched the lives of strange people living in the fictional town of Royston Vasey.

With the revival of that comedy 15 years after it was axed in 2002, Steve made it clear it was not completely over for Inside No. 9.

He then added: ‘We’re not saying it’s over for good.

‘After all, The League Of Gentlemen came back, but we won’t be looking to make any more episodes for the time being.’

They went on to explain that they will be instead focus on new projects after eight years working on the cult BBC Two show.

Each episode of Inside No. 9 features a story exploring dark themes inside a mansion, a dressing room or a flat – all called number nine.

The show has also previously been nominated for three National Television Awards. 

For the Christmas special, Simon Callow and former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati will be making an appearance.

It is titled The Bones Of St Nicholas and airs on Thursday 22 December on BBC Two.
