Final three Strictly Come Dancing stars revealed

Paralympic sprinter Jonnie Peacock, magician’s assistant Debbie McGee and singer Alexandra Burke were confirmed as the final three celebrities taking part on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The trio were announced as the last three contestants on Monday night’s The One Show, and all gushed of their excitement to hit the dance floor.

Most notable on the line-up is GB sprinter Jonnie, 24 – who marks the first ever disabled contestant as a Paralympic athlete, telling hosts Alex Jones and Matt Baker that he’s hoping to ‘change the stigma’ of the series.

Confirming three celebrities on the line-up, GB sprinter Jonnie was confirmed to be hitting the floor – and the first ever Paralympic athlete to take part.

Speaking of his history making, he excitedly told Alex and Matt: ‘This is the first time they’ve got a disabled person, so I think it will be really good, and I hope we can change some of the stigma.’

The athlete went on to explain how he will partake in the show, and revealed he may have to have a special leg made – but joked it was his dancing ability that was more of a concern.

He said: ‘A professional came to check out the restrictions of my sprinting leg, but I think she realised quickly it was me that was the restriction!

‘I don’t know if i’ll be able to use my sprinting leg but I might have to get something made for more intricate dances such as the jive.’

However, he went on to joke that he has never been a good dancer and does not expect to win – instead wanting the experience of learning a new skill.

The sprinter is best known for bagging the gold medal for the T44 Men’s 100m at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 games.

A number of sporting giants, including Mark Ramprakash, Darren Gough, Greg Rutherford and Louis Smith have appeared on the show in the past, but Jonnie is the first Paralympian to be signed up.

However back in 2014, Strictly did air a Sport Relief special, which saw four Paralympic athletes hit the floor – blind footballer David Clark, javelin thrower Nathan Stephens, wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft, and sitting volleyball player Martine Wright.

The British ‘blade runner’, who had his right leg amputated below the knee when he was five after contracting meningitis, added that he hopes to change perceptions of disability.

He said: ‘The opportunity to be the first contestant with a disability to take part in Strictly’s main show was too good to turn down.

‘I’ve got no previous dance history outside of the occasional “worm” at a mate’s party and I know this will be a challenge and a new experience. I can’t wait to see what I can achieve and how far I can push myself.’

Cheering him on during the Saturday night live shows is likely to be his girlfriend of five years, Sally Brown, who is also a Paralympic runner.

It is understood the athlete – who also won the 100m at the Birmingham Athletics Grand Prix last weekend – wants to be treated the same as his rivals and has made no special requirements regarding his coaching.

However, those closest to Peacock will be all too aware of the risks of taking part in the contest, with the intense dance training putting extra pressure on his stump.

Earlier this year German Paralympic runner Heinrich Popow took part in Germany’s version of Strictly, Let’s Dance – but had to bow out of the contest due to a swelling on his stump.

Additionally, 11-time Paralympic gold-medallist Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson spoke out during last month’s World Championships about the difficulties amputees face in avoiding injury.

‘For amputee sprinters, it’s very difficult,’ she told the BBC. ‘If you have any bruising or the slightest mark on your stump you can’t train.

‘It changes everything you do. As an amputee, you have bone and soft tissue without the joints and bits protecting it. Long-term, that’s tough on the body. That area of skin can be really hard to heal – you could be out for six months or a year.’

Joining Jonnie on the line-up was Debbie McGee – who has been confirmed just one day after rumours emerged she had signed up, in her late husband Paul Daniels’ memory.

She laughed: ‘During the first day of rehearsal I trod on people’s toes, so I hope I don’t do that on Strictly!
