Over 50 people were forced to leave their homes after a fire broke out at their 25-storey tower block.

Thick, black smoke was seen billowing across the London skyline above the block of flats in Edmonton Green, north of the capital.

Ten fire engines were scrambled to the building at 5.39pm, one of four 230ft blocks in the area.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed they had contained the flames in just under two hours and 50 people had escaped before they arrived.

One man had to be led down an internal staircase to safety, they added.

The cause of the fire, which broke out on the sixth floor of the building, is not yet known.

It happened near the area’s North Mall and Edmonton Green bus station.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: ‘Ten fire engines were called to a fire in a block of flats by the North Mall in Edmonton.

‘Brigade control officers received nearly fifty calls about the fire which was very visible.

‘Part of a four bedroomed flat on the 6th floor was alight. Crews wearing breathing apparatus led one man to safety through an internal staircase and around 50 residents left the block before the arrival of the Brigade.

‘Ten fire engines from stations including Tottenham, Chingford and Southgate fire stations were at the scene.

‘The Brigade was called at 1739 and the fire was under control by 1910. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.’
