Fire breaks out near Wills Memorial Building Bristol

A huge fire has broken out near one of Bristol University’s most iconic buildings.

Fire crews were scrambled to the blaze today, near the Wills Memorial Building, designed by esteemed British architect Sir George Oatley, in the city centre.

The fire is believed to be in the Fry Building, a Grade II listed Bristol University building that was in the process of being upgraded after a £33million investment.

Surrounding roads have been closed and nearby buildings are understood to have been evacuated.

Avon Fire and Rescue FBU wrote on Twitter: ‘Thoughts with crews dealing with incident in Bristol right now.

‘Hopefully not as bad as it seems. Plz give crews room to work & be patient if delayed’.

The Fry Building formerly housed the university’s School of Biological Sciences until 2014 and was due to re-open as part of the School of Mathematics in spring 2018.
