Fire burns metres away from homes in Sydney’s northern beaches 

A fire burned dangerously close to multi-million mansions in Sydney’s north on Tuesday. 

The flames were seen raging within metres of the properties in North Curl Curl, in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. 

Large clouds of thick billowing smoke could be seen close to the properties and the sea in the beachside suburb.

A terrified resident told 7 News it was ‘real bad’ as he coughed while speaking to a reporter about the fire.  

The footage showed several multi-story homes standing firm as the flames ripped through the area.

A firefighter could be seen inside one backyard with a hose to prepare for the worst possible scenario.  

The fire was a ‘hazard reduction burn’, which firefighters told Nine News was designed to protect the homes.

‘Obviously it comes up near their homes and we have fire crews right behind those homes,’ he said. 

‘That is actually part of it, to get rid of that fuel close to the homes and actually give themselves a barrier between the bush area and the houses.’
