A fire has ravaged three houses near Wollongong on the NSW south coast, with strong winds causing havoc for firefighters.

Crews battled the blaze at Lawrence Hargrave Drive in Coalcliff, between Sydney and Wollongong, which spread rapidly as a result of strong winds.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry told Daily Mail Australia that the fire started about 7.30pm on Friday and took about 90 minutes to be extinguished.

Three homes were completely destroyed as a result of the fire which happened at 7.30pm

‘The fire fighters had a hard time putting out the fire because of the strong winds,’ he said.

He also said that fire crew stayed at the scene overnight to ensure that if re-ignition were to reoccur, it would have been put out early.

Mr Dewberry said there were no injuries reported, while the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
