  • The younger boy was knocked out by the gases but was not seriously hurt

A little boy and a toddler have been rescued after being trapped more than 30 feet underground in a septic tank underground in north-central China.

One firefighter volunteered to crawl through a tiny gap that covered the ditch and descend to save the boys without any protective gear.

The toddler boy fell unconscious when he was lifted up to the ground surface; the firefighter carried the eight-year-old boy and passed him through the gap to his colleagues.

Firefighter Wang Yulong volunteered himself to rescue the boys in a septic tank in China

The one-year-old boy was said to have fallen into the pit toilet near a mosque by the side of Guyuan No. 2 Middle School at the south of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region at night on June 14, nearby residents told Ningxia Fire Brigade.

The pit toilet was covered by concrete with a small gap measuring 20 centimetres (7.8inch) wide and 40 centimetres (1.3ft) long.

The neighbours sent an eight-year-old boy down to rescue but only found the pair trapped under.

Ningxia Fire Brigade were alerted to the scene with two fire engines and 16 firfighters.

They first sent oxygen tank down to the septic tank to reduce the build-up of biogas.

Firefighter Wang Yulong, who is the thinnest among the team members, volunteered to abseil down the septic tank through the narrow rectangular gap.

Rescue footage shows his colleagues carefully push him through the gap.

Officer Wang put a safety belt around the toddler’s waist as his colleague pulled the boy up carefully.

He then carried the young boy and lifted him up close to the gap so the other firefighter could drag him to the ground.

Officer Wang then carefully squeezed himself through the gap.

The two boys were reported to have sustained minor injuries.
