First Dates viewers are heartbroken over Ian

First Date viewers were left ‘in tears’ after shy Doctor Who fan Ian failed to secure a second date on Monday night’s episode.

In heart-wrenching scenes, the 31-year-old science technician told nursery nurse Stacie that it was his first ever date after bullies crippled his self-confidence as a child.

However viewers’ hopes for a happy ending were dashed when Stacie revealed that she saw Ian ‘more as a friend’ and said did not want to meet up again.

One distraught supporter tweeted: ‘Gutted for Ian, bless him, there’s plenty more fish in the sea, don’t panic.’

Another added: ‘You’re a top guy & anyone would be lucky to have ya [sic].’

Ian and Stacie had a slightly awkward start to their meal at the Paternoster Chop House, in London, but conversation started to flow when Ian started to ask Stacie about her favourite films and bands.

At one point he even declared she was ‘girlfriend material’.

Ian won over viewers when he revealed how school bullies had caused lasting damage to his self-esteem.

One viewer tweeted: ‘Ian talking about being bullied at school makes me so sad. I so want this date to go well for him.’

Others called out the bullies who were responsible, with one posting: ‘Ian is proof bullying is not ok! He left school 16yrs ago and still struggles with his confidence because of bullies [sic].’

Despite signs that the date was turning around, it was too little too late for Stacie who revealed she did not want to see Ian again.

When brought together to reflect on their experience, Stacie asked Ian to go first and he admitted he would like to go on a second date.

While he might have failed in winning over Stacie, he certainly impressed viewers of the show, who called on producers to invite him back for a second chance at love.

One wrote: ‘Poor Ian the science guy. Gutted she said no. I’ll go on a date with you!’
