Five cities where homes sell for as little as $350,000

With house prices skyrocketing across Australia’s major cities, more people are struggling when it comes to purchasing a home.

But five towns across the country’s east coast have emerged as affordable alternatives, with the median house price in some as little as $350,000, News.com.au reports.

However, it will mean swapping the rat race for a quieter life in places situated up to 200 kilometres away from the nearest hub.

Although the Greater Geelong area is 75 kilometres and an hour long trade ride from Victoria's capital, it offers a median house price of $500,000 (Pictured is a Newtown home on sale for $499,000)

Newcastle, 160km north of Sydney, is one such area many people are choosing to set up in, given its proximity to the city and stunning coastline.

While beachfront homes there can set buyers back close to $1million, places closer to the nearby Hunter Valley region tend to boast more modest abodes around the $400,000 mark.

Moving further north, the shining strip between the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales offers an equally appealing spot to put down roots.

With a growing population pushing 570,000, the median property price is slightly higher than other areas, with the average price listed as $600,000.

The lower prices often mean swapping the rat race for a quieter life hundreds of kilometres, but does not mean people need to give up style or comfort, such as with this $460,000 home near Newcastle, NSW
