Five people have been killed and five more injured after a horror crash between a minibus and a 4×4 car in Scotland late on Thursday night.

The crash occurred just before midnight on the A96 between Huntly and Keith in Moray, officials said.

One person is reported to have sustained ‘potentially life-threatening injuries’ in the smash.

Police did not disclose details of which vehicles the casualties were in. 

Several police cars and ambulances were seen pulled to the side of the road, as emergency services were assisted by an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter, reported the BBC. 

The motorway between Keith and Huntly remained closed overnight. 

Moray is located in the north east of Scotland, between Aberdeen and Inverness.

Sgt Peter Henderson said: ‘Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident at this very sad time.

‘Motorists are thanked for their patience at this time and we would urge anyone who was in the area last night leading up to the incident at around 23:50 to please get in touch as our inquiries at the scene continue.’

Local politicians said they were shocked by the incident. 

Richard Lochhead, the SNP MSP for Moray, said: ‘So sorry to hear about such an awful tragedy locally. My thoughts are with everyone affected and thanks to emergency services. Community will be shocked by this sad news.’

Moray MP Douglas Ross tweeted: ‘Terrible news this morning. Five people were killed on the A96 last night and another five injured.

‘Our thoughts are with all affected at this time.’
