‘Five people killed’ as two French army helicopters crash

  • The crash occurred over Lake Carces north of popular tourist spot St Tropez
  • Local officials said both aircraft were from the Army’s School of Light Aviation
  • Authorities have confirmed they are still searching for other passengers.

Five people have been killed after two French military helicopters from an army flight training school crashed in the southeastern Var region, local media reports.

A security source and an official from the local authority said that a total of five people were killed in the shocking incident, which happened over Lake Carces – a popular tourist destination north of the St Tropez. 

A local official said both aircraft were from the Army’s School of Light Aviation in the nearby town of Cannet des Maures.

‘An emergency operation has been launched, with other helicopters looking for possible survivors,’ said the spokesman.

Authorities have confirmed they are still searching for other passengers.   

The helicopters involved were both Aérospatiale Gazelles – a model favoured by the French military.

There have been no immediate details on what caused the tragic crash.
